The year was 1992 - Bush versus Clinton, AIDS and Zoe Leonard's I Want a President.
Leonard, a feminist and queer voice of the times wrote the powerful and visceral poem inspired by friend and activist Eileen Myles.
Myles entered the '92 presidential race as an "openly female" candidate - with a backstory fueled by queerness, poverty and AIDS. As you can imagine her run for president was a stark contrast with her white male opponents.
In the poem Leonard shares her desire for a leader that represents all and not just a lucky few... sound familiar ??
In light of the current shit show that we're living in our beloved country (and the world) 'I want a president' is #shitwelike.
